Vertical Naigation

Being one of the most common and oldest navigation types on the Web, you might overlook the potential, effectiveness and impact of vertical navigation.

Redefined in the modern web vertical navigation is now accessible and super-sexy at the same time. If designed with the right shape, behaviour dynamics and filled with the right content, vertical navigation may result in a enhanced user interaction and user experience.

Do

  1. Balance play and function. If balanced right vertical navigation becomes part of your story or identity.
  2. Treat navigation as content. Make the journey to the content at least as important as the content itself.
  3. Make it snappy and ensure the user feels in control.

Don't

  1. Exaggerate navigation transitions.
  2. Hide your navigation.
  3. Annoy the user with newly discovered tricks and if you do, make sure it adds to the usability and the experience.
