Communicating With Colour

Posted in Design by Brett Robinson: 29th November 2008, 09:52

Colour is a form of communication. If you use it with care and love, colour can be one of your strongest assets of communication. Colour can provoke all manner of emotion. It can make people happy, sad or even enrage! It’s a matter of precision. Think of colour as a form of music… some songs are sad, some hard to describe and some can move mountains. Colour for websites is what music is to films.

Visually colour works in the same way in all media. Technically, what separates different colours are their codenames, RGB, CYMK, PANTONE and HEX (web).

Remember that the beholder of colour is the eyes and you can create memorable moments if you can make candy for them. There are no rules but to us at FHOKE less is more! Too many different colours and your going to end up with colour over-kill, and don’t always go for the brightest colours to catch the users attention. It’s a lot more effective if you can achieve balance and harmony.

So to summarise use colours that add something to the work and give the design the right balance. Figure out what you want to say and then try to find the colour that matches those objectives, and remember, share ideas. Exploring different alternatives can open up new ideas and create better results.
