As with any design project, typography plays a vital role in successfully communicating your ideas. Refer to your client's Corporate Identity or Brand Guidelines - very often a pre-selected typeface at a range of different weights and point sizes will have been defined in order to maintain the integrity of the brand.
In the case where no guidelines have been specified, a wider range of typefaces can be explored. For example, sometimes a highly stylized typeface when used in moderation can enrich and complement the elements within a sites layout.
When using typography in a site always ensure that the main site navigation and links are clear and legible. We can achieve this by using accent colours, different weights, or simply variations in point sizes. Continue this trend into the layout of the footer but make sure that any type at a small point size is clear and legible, you don't want to confuse the user. And don't use overly stylised typefaces when laying out large amounts of copy it will look messy and confusing. The same goes for using too many varieties of typefaces on a page we always use a rule of thumb that a maximum of four is best practice.
