Interaction Online

The interactive quality of the web is one of the main features that sets it apart from other mediums. Interaction means allowing the users to actively engage with the world you have created on your site, with text, images, sounds and animations. It can be everything from simple feedback when they move their mouse over a link, to a complex interactive story.

It is important to find the appropriate level of interaction for the site at hand. Adding complex interaction might only distract from what you want to say, and create a jittery user experience. On the other hand, when you do manage to find the right level on interaction, it can give your users a deeper understanding and connection with your site.

When putting together an idea create a flowchart of the logical information and story units so you are always clear on the flow of your content. Maybe try shifting the structure of these around and see what happens to the user experience. But don't complicate things, try testing the site on your less web savvy family or friends, to check out how less computer-literate people perceive it. And more importantly don't create interaction just for the sake of it, make sure they are always in tune with the overall design and feel of the site.
