For many years we at FHOKE have used MSN Messenger to drop friends and colleagues short messages and interesting links, and from examples I’ve seen of Twitter - it doesn’t seem all that different.

What Twitter allows us to do is share relevant information with like-minded people, people that you may never get a chance to meet otherwise. It also opens up an opportunity to shamelessly promote yourself, your business and the services you offer. Here are a few things to consider before you twitter:

What Should You Tweet About?
You can tweet about anything but make sure you are regularly posting informative inserts and things that other people will be interested in, otherwise you run the risk of boring your followers.

Don’t Let Your Twittering’s Affect Your Brand Or Reputation!
Always remember that existing clients and potential new ones may at some point view your twitter profile, anything posted on twitter will be around on search engines in the future.

To Follow Or Not To Follow?
When people start following you on twitter, do you follow them right back? Maybe not.

Don’t be polite and follow them just because they are following you, check them out and see what they have posted – is it interesting and relevant to you and your followers? If not - don’t bother, as following unnecessary waffle doesn’t help anyone. Deciding on your following criteria before you start may be a good idea.

In our experience Twitter is a great tool, we have met some interesting people and I am sure we will continue to do so - you never know, one day we may actually get some business from it.
