So 2008 saw the year of the redesign for many of the worlds big brands. We highlighted a few of these in our recent blog 2008 The Year of The Redesign
What's been interesting is to see many bloggers featuring the new Pepsi look. Although we've not seen it here in the UK yet it seems to have spread across the US already with some mixed opinions. What is apparent though is Pepsi are really pushing this. They've even dedicated a YouTube channel to the re-brand and a microsite both cleverly titled Refresh Everything.
So Pepsi have been clever and jumped on the social bandwagon to spread the word and recognition of the new brand. But has it worked? We definitely love the new video. Great use of typography and colours see for yourselves here:
But the same just can't be said for the new packaging. The logo mark is a simple evolution of the old and seems to work and won't scare or confuse consumers. And has anyone noticed the similarities between that and Obama's campaign logo? The YouTube site certainly draws some comparison with an open letter to the President.
Back to the packaging and one look at the typography and it just goes downhill from there. Pepsi seem to have taken a step back and there is just no excitement to the brand no more. They've certainly gone for the minimalist approach but its just starting to look like a Supermarkets own brand of Cola. Let's hope Pepsi see sense and introduce something a bit more exciting this year. Here are some shots of the new packaging.
So, for 2009 maybe its time your brand had a kick start with a redesign. If you want to find out more how we can help you do this contact us here.
