3 New iPhone Apps

Posted in News & Articles, iPhone by FHOKE: 24th September 2009, 13:45

Over the past month a few exciting new apps have been released for the iPhone. It seems the current focus on the iPhone platform is still going strong and really highlights the P.R. opportunities that exist for brands associating themselves with the phone.

We’ve showcased three of the more high profile apps to have been released and all got much hyped media coverage when they were. At the time of writing there is also a big P.R. drive for the Vodafone 360 platform, time will tell if that will succeed in the rapidly populating app market.

Starbucks

Whether you love ‘em or hate them Starbucks has finally come to the iPhone with not one but two Free iPhone apps. And they’ve not come along quietly either the media have really grabbed a hold of this news and run with it.

The first app, myStarbucks, is a simple store locator. It also breaks down the nutritional values of their products (something all the fast food / drink chains seem to be doing these days).

The second app, which is in trial, enables customers to manage their “Starbucks Card” – they can check their balance, transfer money to it, and also includes QuickPay, a swipe transaction system using semacode technology. Unfortunately for Starbucks addicts the app is only on trial in Seattle and the Bay Area apparently to do with a high number of Apple and Starbucks consumers.

Find the app in action here Genoco (unfortunately it never looked like this).

Comics by comiXology

Comics by comiXology is an app that brings reading comics to the small screen. Once downloaded the new in-app purchasing option of iPhone OS 3 becomes apparent, allowing you to browse, search, download and pay for titles without leaving the application. It’s like an App Store for comics basically.

With 30 free comics coming bundled with the app, it also features landscape mode, zoom in and a shrunken, full-page layout view before or after reading a full-page. Users tap the right side to move to the next frame but the great part is when that next frame is a row below it scans down and left giving you a sneak peak of the bits in-between almost as if you were scanning the page.

With so many other options the user is also able to buy the actual printed copy from the app.

TomTom

The TomTom iPhone app has been officially launched now and many are waiting in anticipation to snap up the car kit to accompany the app. Although pricey it will no doubt be a runaway success with app lovers.

Using iPhone’s innovative technology, the TomTom app lets you tap your way from A to B – putting you in touch with all the best routes. Scroll through the menu, or pinch to zoom in and out on a map using the iPhone’s multi-touch display.

It also features functions such as finding a place to eat where you can choose a restaurant, call to reserve your table, then find your way there all within the app. Or maybe you need to find how to get to an entry in your contacts list, well the TomTom app will find your way there too.

  1. Hey, thanks for the write-up!

Just to be clear, as our own naming conventions are confusing, the digital comics app is just called “Comics”.

The app called “comiXology” is for tracking comics in print, and includes all our editorial content (columns, podcasts), and lets you create an online “pull-list”. In essence, a copy of our site on your phone.

    Thanks!
