We read a short article today on a piece of technology and some interesting interface design we felt should be shared. A new service from 3 mobile in Sweden, 3Live Shop, is like its name sake, a live online shop where customers of 3 can interact with a real salesperson. Putting it simply, a video call but with an almost futuristic twist. The twist being a customised multi-touch experience that allows the salesperson to interact with products on the display while it’s all recreated on the customer’s screen. Think Tom Cruise goes phone salesperson in Minority Report.

The customer initiates a video call with a salesperson who in turn gives the customer guidance of products that would fit them. The salesperson can drag a product onto the screen, show its features such as different colours and monthly cost and then drag it into the shopping cart. All this with just the touch of a finger.

The original idea with 3LiveShop was to be able to offer all customers a personalised service, regardless of geography by allowing customer and salesperson to interact with each other as you would in any shop.

Whether this is really needed at all is another question. In our opinion probably not. Most web users want to be in and out of a store quickly. But for those that are maybe more remote and are unable to enter a physical shop, where they prefer to get advice then yes it does have its audience. It's an interesting and clever bit of kit and we are sure it's got its use in something far more meaningful. Oh and why not go touchscreen? What does everyone else think?
