Challenge
Content teams increasingly rely on AI, but existing tools introduce friction. Writers are forced to move between WordPress, AI writing tools, image generators, and media platforms, leading to broken workflows, duplicated effort, and inconsistent results.
From a technical perspective, the challenge was to build an AI tool that could work natively within the Block Editor, Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), WooCommerce, and the Media Library without disrupting performance or usability. The plugin also had to support multiple AI providers while remaining flexible to add new services as models emerged.
The solution needed to feel like part of WordPress itself, not a third-party tool bolted on.
WordPress and Platform Integration
Cortex AI was designed as a fully native WordPress plugin, built with performance and scalability in mind.
Rather than limiting users to a single AI provider, Cortex AI supports multiple services, including OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Stability AI, allowing users to choose the most appropriate provider for each task. This modular provider architecture ensures there is no vendor lock-in and allows new AI services to be added with minimal overhead.
Assets are conditionally loaded to keep the WordPress admin fast, and API usage is optimised to control costs while maintaining responsiveness.
Content, Media & Accessibility
Cortex AI was designed to enhance every part of the WordPress content workflow, combining text transformation, media generation, and accessibility into a single, native experience.
Text transformation works directly within the content. Eight AI-powered actions were implemented — Rewrite, Expand, Condense, Summarise, Professional, Personal, Generate Title, and Generate Excerpt — and are available across the WordPress Block Editor, Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), and WooCommerce product descriptions. Transformations are fully context-aware, taking into account surrounding content, page metadata, and categories to ensure outputs are relevant and consistent. Brand voice rules and stop words can also be defined, allowing teams to maintain a consistent tone across large, multi-author sites.
Alongside text, Cortex AI includes a full media generation suite built directly into the WordPress Media Library. Users can generate AI images using multiple providers, with control over dimensions, aspect ratios, and output styles. Generated assets behave like native WordPress media, making them immediately usable across posts, pages, and products. For more advanced workflows, Cortex AI also supports AI-generated video, with long-running tasks processed asynchronously in the background to avoid disrupting the editorial workflow. Stock imagery is integrated directly via Unsplash, allowing users to search, select, and correctly attribute images without leaving WordPress.
Accessibility and automation were treated as first-class concerns throughout development. Cortex AI automatically generates alt text when images are uploaded, ensuring new content is accessible by default, while existing media libraries can be batch-processed to retroactively add alt text to legacy content. Background processing is handled using WP-Cron, with intelligent retries and robust error handling to ensure reliability at scale without blocking the editor.
